Prepare ethanoic acid from ethanol
Both ethanol and ethanoic compounds are very useful chemicals. Each of one these compound can
converted to other one using different reagents. When ethanol is converted into ethanoic acid, an oxidation occurs.
Alcohols react with strong oxidizing agents like KMnO4 and K2Cr2O7 and
give carboxylic acids without changing number of carbon atoms in the chain. Also, other carboxylic acids can be prepared from reacting alcohols and strong oxidizing agents.
To prepare ethanol from ethanoic acid, you can use LiAlH4, ether and water. LiAlH4 is a very good reducing agent.
Important:
Don't need to heat the mixture for these reactions.
